50 years of Bangladesh's existence:

50 years of Bangladesh's existence: Language, cultural domination, disenfranchisement or any conspiracy, what were the driving forces behind East Pakistan becoming Bangladesh?

When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dhaka on the occasion of Bangladesh National Day in March this year, the two countries, along with their counterpart Hasina Wajid, agreed to make December 6 the 'Day of Friendship'. Will celebrate

One has to go back 50 years to know the significance of this history, when on December 6, 1971, India recognized Bangladesh as an independent country when it was the eastern part of Pakistan.

Just ten days later, Lieutenant General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, commander of the Pakistan Army in East Pakistan, signed a surrender document with Indian Army Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora and conceded defeat. Emerged as a state on the world map.

It would not be wrong to say that Bangladesh has the closest ties with India among the South Asian countries. At the trade level alone, the two countries have a ارب 10 billion trade partnership, the largest in South Asia.

A study of the textbooks taught in Pakistan gives an idea of the state narrative that covers such close relations between Bangladesh and India and the reasons for the separation of East Pakistan.

For example, a study of Pakistan's ninth and tenth grade books published by the Federal Board states that 'India had a role to play in separating East and West Pakistan.

It is written in the lessons of these books that the Indian leadership did not like the establishment of Pakistan and they started conspiracies to break Pakistan immediately after the partition of the subcontinent.

It was further learned in these lessons that there were large numbers of Hindus living in East Pakistan who were sympathetic to India, and with the passage of time separatist elements found a place to flourish there and consequently the people of East Pakistan The victim of the statemen

Researcher and author, Anam Zakaria writes in her book, 1971, A People's History from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India, that the narrative in these textbooks presents all Bengali Hindus as supporters of India and as 'traitors'. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the general impression in Pakistan is that India was the cause of the break up of East and West Pakistan.

Now that Bangladesh is about to complete 50 years of its existence in the next few days, the BBC has sought references from various research books and conversations with researchers to find out what were the factors that led to its demise. Just 24 years after its formation, Pakistan was divided, was this inevitable, and will the cold-blooded relations between the two countries change in the future?

'As far as the state language is concerned, it will be Urdu only'

When Pakistan came into being in August 1947, it consisted of two major regions.

East Pakistan was inhabited by 56% of the population of the country who spoke Bengali language while West Pakistan was inhabited by speakers of Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi, Pashto and other local languages. At the same time, the Muslims who migrated from India were Urdu speakers and accounted for 3% of the population.

In his book A History of Bangladesh, Dutch professor William Van Schindel, who has studied the history of Bangladesh, writes that the supremacy of those belonging to 'North India' emerged immediately after the formation of Pakistan.

He writes that while Bangladeshi Muslims were expected to play a significant role in the new country as a majority population, Muslim leaders from 'North India' held the reins of the country in their hands. He took it because he was considered the guardian of the Muslim movement in South Asia and he believed that the future of Pakistan would be under his ideology.

William Chandel further sheds light on the fact that the 'North Indian' Muslims living in West Pakistan were based on two groups and owned the country's black and white.

One of them was the immigrants who spoke Urdu and despite being in the minority after the migration, they expected that their customs and traditions would prevail over the local culture. And the other group was the Muslims living in Punjab who owned civilian institutions, army and agricultural lands and emerged as a clear majority in the country.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

William Chandel writes in his book on language that the initial conflict between East and West Pakistan was on this basis. Most of the people living in West Pakistan did not know Bengali language and they considered it as 'Hindu influence'.

Perhaps this is why when a Bengali member of the Assembly in February 1948 moved a resolution that Urdu as well as Bengali be used in the Assembly, the Prime Minister of the country Liaquat Ali Khan replied: Urdu is the language of all these Muslims. It is important that this nation has a language and that language can only be Urdu.

The very next month, when Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, visited Dhaka in March 1948, he too said bluntly in his address: “I want to make it clear that the state language of Pakistan will be Urdu only. And if anyone misleads you with this, then he is the enemy of Pakistan. So as far as the state language is concerned, it is only Urdu.

Nilesh Bose, another South Asian historian and author, writes in his book 'Recasting the Region' that some Bengali intellectuals had been talking to Muhammad Ali Jinnah since January 1948 about the status of Bengali language. But they were not heard and Muhammad Ali Jinnah insisted that Bengali was used privately in East Pakistan but Urdu would remain the official language.

When the BBC asked Ahsan Butt, a professor at George Mason University in the United States, about this, he said that the founders of Pakistan had Urdu as their own language and perhaps they were associating Urdu with Islam.

Professor Ahsan Butt, author of a book on separatist movements, questioned that most countries in the world, including India, do not have a national language and it is important to think about why we need a national language.

When Anam Zakaria was asked by the BBC about this, he gave a detailed answer and said that according to him, the main role in the formation of Bangladesh was the language movement.

"It's not just that you're not recognizing someone's language, it's more than that. Suppressing the language means that you are suppressing their culture. And this is exactly what happened immediately after the formation of Pakistan, when we saw that the language movement in 1952 killed students.

Cultural domination, disenfranchisement and inequality

While the issue of language was of paramount importance, many researchers point out the economic, social and cultural attitudes towards East Pakistanis and their disenfranchisement. The hand is.

When the BBC asked Lahore-based researcher and author Dr Tariq Rehman about this, he said that the main issue was with East Pakistan.

"Whether they are discriminated against culturally, or in the division of power, or in language and economic discrimination, it is clear that they have not been given justice."

Prof. Ahsan Butt also supports the same point and says that the inequality and all kinds of discrimination against the Bengali population of East Pakistan had caused grief and anger in their population which resulted in 1971.

On the other hand, Anam Zakaria says that other factors such as economic exploitation or dictatorship, what came up again and again in her own research was a demonstration of cultural domination by West Pakistan.

He said that racial slurs were used against East Pakistanis, they were seen as 'weak and inferior' and racist attitudes and statements were made against them and their culture was said to be 'Hindu'. Is and has to be 'purified'.

Drs. Tariq Rehman also quoted in an equal passage that the citizens of Bangladesh were called in a derogatory manner.

"In my opinion, if you do not deal with a person and deal with him as a lowly citizen by desiring to treat them as equals, then in my view this has changed into a major cause of US disintegration

but, when asked by the BBC about this, Meghna Gohathakarta, a former college professor in Dhaka, said language translation and lifestyle and financial discrimination were the main reasons for Bangladesh's independence but the reason for West Pakistan's total independence policy. use of choice.

"I expect that the most important motive will be the whole election of the precious Islamic state of Islamabad in addition to its efforts to suppress any opposition from the eastern part of the .s .a. Through aggression." If democratic processes are achieved and assets are disbursed in the same way, financial and cultural differences may be overcome.

Language conflict and the exploitation of the people of East Pakistan, what is the work of Pakistanis?

Safdar Mehmood, a former director and journalist who died a few months ago, writes in his 7451f44f4142a41b41fe20fbf0d491b7, 'Why Pakistan is Hurt' that when Pakistan was formed, provincial styles began to emerge in large parts of the U.S. s. and as a final result in West and East Pakistan in Dhaka. Hatred began to grow among the 2, which turned out to be a blessing for the use of left-wing politicians.

Safdar Mehmood writes that the Awami League is actually a dictatorial business with good intentions of the province and nearby who have not tried to play for a political party across the country.

He says the rejection of the decision passed by the then Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan at the February 1948 meeting in the Bengali language made academics and other professionals happy that the working authorities but the Punjab people were in the forefront. they have stripped of their mother tongue in Bengalis regardless of whether the level of Emperor or Prime Minister has not changed to Punjabi.

however, Afrasiab Mehdi Hashmi, who is responsible for the appointment of Pakistan's unequivocal Commissioner in Bangladesh, writes in his 7451f44f4142a41b41fe20fbf0d491b7 '1971, the fact and fiction' in general that contributed to the fact that Western Pakistanis tried to suppress their Western Pakistani language. however these allegations are really false.

Afrasiab Mehdi writes that Urdu is the language of Islam on the continent for generations and is spoken far and wide on each of the u. s ..

giving the region, he said that Urdu is similar to Arabic which is the language of the Qur’an and consequently being a Muslim u. s. Urdu language is advanced to identify Pakistani.

He expressed his frustration that if Pakistani founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah had a great opportunity to give Bangla the national language, it was possible that Pakistan could face many challenges in its establishment and different regions could change the status quo in their provincial languages. call to action

be the inevitable partition of Pakistan?

always with many researchers and experts, it is no longer possible for East and West Pakistan to coexist, and they do this from a distance of more than 1000 miles between 2 regions, with our central 'enemy'.

at the same time as many say the political, financial and social divisions within the areas were so previously 2927099c7129e5e67b031f9eb65b6349 that it would not be possible now for them to live together for long.

while this question was asked of Drs. Tariq Rehman, said West Pakistan was transformed into a power base from the beginning because of its provincial and provincial dignity. "The federation will pay taxes on the sale of Pittson and use it to fulfill the security dreams of the United States."

William Van Schindel also writes in his 7451f44f4142a41b41fe20fbf0d491b7 that from 1947 to 1970 more than half of Pakistan's international spending was spent on defense. He also wrote that Pakistan will earn a third of its foreign exchange earnings through the sale of Patsun however it was cut almost all of Western Pakistan.

Drs. Tariq Rehman says that apart from this, many development obligations have been found in West Pakistan and the attitudes of the people towards East Pakistan are becoming ‘ridiculous’ more than that.

about Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, leader of the Awami League, a political birthday party in East Pakistan, said despite the fact that he was given the government after winning the 1970 elections, the united states could not remain united.

Sheikh Mujib has been timely and has indicated that he could reduce the security charge to deliver development projects in East Pakistan but u. The s .'s handest, the military, could not come up with a plan to reduce its price range. So I do not expect the two halves to live together for long.

However, Professor Meghna Gohathakarta, in answering the same question, said that many people, looking at a few regional areas, say that separation is inevitable but no long inhisbоokay  thаt while there wаs  а  wаr between Раkistаn      аnd Indiа in 1965,Eаst Раkistаn hаd nоminаl        protection fасilities with оnly оne divisiоn аrmy   аnd 15 Sаber fighter jets whilst there wаs  nо        соmmuniсаtiоn with West  Раkistаn. have been    equаl  tо
